Beyond Borders Book Club

I have taken photos of the library and created an online book club, but I can't sit here, enjoying the delicious cool change without acknowledging those for whom it has come too late. On Saturday, while I enjoyed a day in the perfectly cool library and Wagga struggled with the discomfort of intense heat, 750 homes were lost, whole towns destroyed, and 131 lives lost in the flames. It's hard to imagine, there are no words. I'm so very sorry.

Tricia
wanted to see our new face-out shelves and I know Chrissie would like to see how the library has changed so I'll take you on a tour. This is the view from the front of the library - the Victory Memorial Gardens.

This is the Civic Centre that houses the Council, Art Gallery, Museum and Library. The national Art Glass Gallery and Civic Theatre are behind this building and the library is right there at the front.

This skylight is directly in front of you when you walk in. In the distance you can see our new magazine rack that holds over 1500 magazines.

This is a new art and craft zone. We have taken these books out of strict Dewey order to make it a bit more like a book shop.

A lovely, long row of travel books. These live just outside my office.

Below the skylight are the stairs that take you downstairs to the fiction areas. This photo was taken from the stairs under which is a great nook that is the youth area.

This is the first face-out you see when you get to the bottom of the stairs. You can see that Margot was the last to restock it as it is full of crime novels. This shelf needs to be refilled every few minutes, or so it seems.

This much larger group of shelves faces the other direction. Margot considers these to be my shelves, so no crime.

Once you have found yourself a towering pile of books you can find a nice place to lounge around and read them. If only I could do that and get paid.

When I mentioned an online book club in my last post I was only thinking of mentioning what I am reading on this blog and having people comment on it. Kristin first gave me the idea that maybe we could do something more and others have encouraged me to do something. So, I created a wiki called the Beyond Borders Book Club. Anyone can become a member, just click on Join this site. When I read a new book I'll list on the Books we are reading page, in alphabetical order according to author (sorry, I am a librarian). Then I'll create a new page where I'll write a bit about the book and my thoughts on it . Then, if people want to discuss it they can go to the discussion forum and start a new thread with the name of the book in the title. Everyone can do the same - add books and we'll discuss them. What do you think?

    Hi Amy
I just did a google search while preparing for Adult Learners Week and your blog was the first on the list! Just saw my name too. I'm nearly famous.
