The Waterlily

It has been such an exhausting, but satisfying week. The trouble is that we are still on holiday time. Andrew and the kids go swimming almost every afternoon, but only when it is cool enough around six, so we eat late and Jossie and Toby stay up much later than usual, especially when the cricket is on. I need a certain amount of time to relax after the kids are in bed so if they go to bed late, so do I.

On Monday morning I got up at 6.30, went to work until 4.30, did the weekly shop, unpacked the shopping and then, with no time for a bite to eat, I picked Alice up and we went to the movies where I had a box of maltesers for dinner! We saw Australia, partly because we felt we ought to support it. The reviews have not been great but I enjoyed it. I did think it was finished at one stage and it went on for at least another hour. It was rather an uncomfortable hour as I drank a whole bottle of water with my maltesers but that is hardly Baz Luhrman's fault. I can't even blame Nicole Kidman with her dodgy English accent and foreign lips for my over-full bladder. When I got home I realised that I would be home late the next night so I cooked dinner for Tuesday and then watched the penultimate episode of Ashes to Ashes. Another late night.

On Tuesday I had to do the radio spot for the library, put together our fortnightly page in the paper and have a book club meeting for strays and waifs who don't have nine friends to form a club. Around 40 people came and so did a reporter from the paper. I got home at 7.30. The cricket was on so I had to wait until 10.30 to watch the final episode of Ashes to Ashes and it was brilliant. I imagine the ABC will show it here soon. I also suppose the Americans will make their own version at some stage. Why do they do it? The original is in English, I just don't see the point.

A sleep in on Wednesday would have really hit the spot but as it was Toby's birthday, we had no chance. He is a very thoughtful boy and while he work up at 6 something, he very kindly stayed in bed until seven. We had pancakes for breakfast and his friend Liam came over to play. They couldn't play outside because it was 41 degrees. The air-con works great for the living areas and kitchen so I baked without a problem. Toby asked for macaroni cheese and a malteser cake. We invited some friends for dinner but they went to hospital and had a baby instead. Little Isabelle was born at 3pm and Toby is very happy to share his birthday. They weren't due here until 5 so I really think they could have come...

It was so hot that night that I don't think anyone in Wagga slept well. We spent Thursday recovering. On Friday I managed to finish putting all the book club discussion guides on the website. There are 53 titles so it was a big job! I know it is boring work stuff but I am so thrilled to have finished, you can see it here. I won't be showing every page we put in the paper, only the ones that have photos of me!

This morning we had a delightful sleep in and a quiet morning at home (except for Andrew who went to work). He came home at lunch time and we bought fish and chips and ate them in the Botanic Gardens under this tree.

There was a deliciously cool breeze and the gardens are beautiful with a curved bridge that looks like the one in Monet's garden and roses and many shades of green. It is still very much in Australia as the the grass that is soft and lush under the trees becomes bleached and brittle in the sun. I lay on the rug reading The Waterlily by Kate Llewellyn (a beautiful book) while Andrew and the kids played soccer.

Before going home we popped up to the museum to dress up and ride the camel. A lovely day.
