A girls' day out
When I know that I have to get up especially early I just don't sleep well. The alarm was set for 5.30 and after being awake for a while I looked up to see if it was almost time to get up only to discover that it was 4am! I managed to get up at the proper time, make lunches, get bags ready and just as Toby and Bethany were getting up, Jossie and I left for school. Only three parents came on the bus, a few others drove down in their own cars, so there were 30 or so children and five adults on the bus for the hour and three quarter long trip to Albury. Jossie and I sat behind her great friend Hannah and her Dad Neil. I had a job keeping Joss from eating all her lunch on the bus.
Unfortunate timing meant that the state carnival was on the same day as the BIPSA one so many of our school's top athletes went to Sydney. This allowed children who don't usually get to go to regional carnivals the opportunity to experience something new. A couple of last minute drop outs meant that some kids could compete in races that they didn't qualify for, so Jossie, who only qualified for high jump, also ran in the 100 metres.

It was icy freezy all day! We soaked up any sunshine that was available and, ridiculously, Jossie and I both have sunburned faces! I took books with me because I thought we would have a lot of
spare time and we did, but I just hung out with Joss and her friends and had a lovely time. We cheered Hannah on when she was in the long jump. Jossie took this brilliant photo.

The kids all found ingenious ways of amusing themselves between events. They rolled down the hill behind us. Starting together....
...and ending up apart.
We bought lollies and hot chips at the canteen and then there were cartwheels down the hill.
The high jump was after lunch and Joss and Hannah were the two Christian College girls in their age group. They had started the high jump very late due to a wet, slippery track so were rushing. They began by putting the bar up so high that only one girl in the group of ten could get over it. I was pretty unimpressed as this one girl then came first and they didn't bother trying to find a second or third place, it was just all over. Still, Joss and Hannah gave it a good go and were pleased with their efforts. Hannah even looks like she might make it over in this photo.
It was as high as her chest and no warm ups allowed!

All the children from our school had fun, were well behaved and very encouraging towards each other. Jossie ran her 100 metres and was upset after being beaten by a bit of a margin. Two of her friends ran to meet her as she walked back to our area, telling her what a good job she had done and not to worry about it. I was really impressed with how the children handled the day and also how the teachers really put the focus on doing their best and having a go. The day ended up being a lovely time spent with my daughter and I was so tired at the end of it, I fell asleep in the bus!
