Edinburgh

There is nothing like starting with a food shot. We arrived in Edinburgh on a Sunday and were very keen to go to church there. When Tim was living in Edinburgh he wasn't in the centre of town so we didn't go to his church, but he recommended Charlotte Chapel. It was great, we even sang some Australian songs! Afterwards we thought we would easily find somewhere to eat but everywhere we tried was packed so we ended up back at the hotel having very nice, if not new or exciting, fish and chips and a burger.

Our hotel was right behind the Royal Mile so we walked absolutely everywhere. This is the view walking up to Edinburgh Castle. As you can see, there were lots of people there and we had quite a wait in the queue. This was compounded by some tourists who were trying to get their son, who must have been at uni, in as a child. There was a very long conversation about it and many other things!

The view was worth the wait.

This is a statue of John Knox, the great protestant reformer and founder of the Presbyterian denomination, and I snuck into a courtyard of the New College, Faculty of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, just down from Edinburgh Castle to take this photo.

At the opposite end of the Royal Mile, down the bottom of the hill, is Holyrood House where the Queen stays when she is in Edinburgh. That makes it a working castle and I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the inside we were allowed to see. It was beautiful and also fascinating to hear the history. Mary Queen of Scots lived here and drama ensued. Look it up if you'd like because I am too tired to tell the story!

There is a ruin of an abbey at one end of the castle which I found very beautiful.

If we had been in Edinburgh a bit longer, or were more active in general and made it a priority, we would have climbed up to Arthur's Seat. This photo was taken from the gardens at Holyrood House.

This little terrier is Greyfriar's Bobby who guarded his master's grave for fourteen years. He now lives on the corner of Candlemakers Row and George IV Bridge, just up from the Venus Flytrap where Tim got his most fabulous tattoo.

I love this view of the castle, taken from Princes Street.

Ahh, Edinburgh.... we'll be back.
