The dull holidays

The problem with going overseas for four weeks is that you leave yourselves a bit short on holidays for the rest of the year. This time last year we went to Tomakin and the kids went to the beach, the zoo and played putt putt golf. This year they have to stay home for the full three week holiday and spend a fair bit of it at daycare with Bethany, Still, it hasn't all been deadly dull. There have been two birthdays after all and visits with friends. Two fun things that I planned before the holidays happened to fall on the same day.

During term time the library runs story times for pre-school children and in the holidays there is always something for school kids. This holidays it was Library 'Lympics and I booked Joss and Tobes in. The kids were put into four teams - China, Japan, Australia and Greece. Joss and Tobes were Japanese and they played indoor games. Toby got two matches in this pairs game, though he said it was an accident!

Jossie and her school friend Alicia were tied up to make a kayak.

They came last in the kayak race. Just like her mother Jossie does not believe in pain for the sake of sport.

The synchronised swimming event was pretty amusing to watch.

Japan and Greece had to go to a tie-breaker and, sadly for Joss and Tobes, Greece were the winners in the end. Thankfully, we had more to look forward to as, after an early dinner, we dressed up and headed back into town for a night at the theatre.

We all went to see Possum Magic: The Musical. We don't go out in the evening very often so it was a big treat and the show was great. Madame Butterfly is coming in September and I am so going to go! Opera in Wagga....who would live in a big city?

As I realised that the Saturday of Bethany's birthday was the one in five that I work, I had to swap so I am working tomorrow. I have made chocolate banana bread with Marsala soaked sultanas - it makes us feel better about being at work on a Saturday. After work I am off to a disco inferno fiftieth! Fancy dress is a must, according to the invitation, so Mim stayed up late last night making me a skirt out of cool, seventies material. Photos will, probably, ensue but I am likely to be mostly behind the camera.

It is about time that I got back to posting my holiday photos but tonight isn't the night. Instead I'll share the CDs we bought. I bought the best of Spandau Ballet and I like it a lot more than Andrew does. Andrew bought Nik Kershaw's latest (yes he is still alive and making music) and I actually like it a lot. Listening to it reminds me of Scotland, especially Callander. The sound of England for us will always be Duffy singing Warwick Avenue as it was on the radio all the time and we saw her perform it on TV. Jackie Chan and Dawn French were very funny that night on Graeme Norton - its funny, the details you remember. We also bought a CD of the King's College Choir and Amy Macdonald. In Dublin we bought The Music of the Temple Bar and in Paris we bought Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulin (I wonder why that was shortened to just 'Amelie' in Australia?) soundtrack and an Edith Piaf album. We'll be up to Edinburgh when I get the photos back out. I may even give you a treat and get Andrew's card out of the digital photo frame to share with you the photo of the deep fried Mars Bar we ate. Mmmm, warm Mars Bar in fish batter.....
