Only four days later
Regular posts, we can do that. Probably. Since we have been home I have been hard at work not doing my assignments. The trouble is (OK, part of the trouble is) that it isn't as though I can take a whole day and just get into it. The time I have to do uni work is after the kids go to bed, and that is the time that I would like to sit down and watch TV or read. Over the last two nights we have watched Bad Santa, which wasn't as funny as I had expected but still good, and The Chronicles of Riddick, the most interesting thing about which was the presence of Karl Urban (he plays Eomer in Lord of the Rings). So, I am going to be hard at work this week. We also did many hours in the garden yesterday clearing and then putting on lots of mushroom compost.
Tim recently did this quiz and I feel I ought to do it too.
If you could be any character from a book, who would you be and why?
Well, this is very difficult for me. It would be easier to say which character out of each book I have read. Like Tim, I adore Samwise Gamgee, and most of the main characters of Lord of the Rings are very loyal, brave and trustworthy. I love Merry and Pippin because they are so much fun as well. But assuming that I should want to be female, I'd be Arwen because she was very patient. From Harry Potter, I would like to be Hermione because she is smart and loyal. My favourite character is Remus Lupin, so ideally I would like to be someone who is friends with him, but those people aren't doing very well!
Which book do you wish you had written and why?
Not sure.
What book(s) have you wanted to change the ending of?
A Fine Balance by Rohan Mistry was hideously depressing. I was also a bit sorry about the ending of A Suitable Boy, but that did not ruin the book, I really love it.
What is most important to you in a book and why?
Story/Plot? Character? Language? Ideas? Other?
Definitely characters. I enjoy a good plot, am put off by bad writing, but it is the characters that really get me in.
In your opinion, who is the writer who is best at:
Story/Plot? Character? Language? Ideas? Other?
Actually, to do this quiz properly would take more effort than I am willing to expend! Ummm, Agatha Christie was very good at plot. All my favourites are good at characters.
Which book(s) have you most wanted to burn/obliterate the memory of off the face of the planet?
I regularly have very strong feelings towards books, but usually in a positive way. Even books I really don't like, eg. A Fine Balance, books by Bryce Courtenay, I don't hate enough to burn.
Describe your favourite place to read (plus essential accompaniments, etc. tea).
Somewhere far away from the children. A window seat with lots of cushions on a cold, rainy day. Tea, chocolate and cake.
Which books are your comfort books? (ie. the ones you keep coming back to to read over and over again because you enjoy them so much each time.)
I have a lot of these. I have read The Chronicles of Narnia every year since I was 21. Lord of the Rings. All Harry Potters - I read these more than once a year. A Suitable Boy. Drovers Road.Catch 22.
What attracts you about your favourite genre?
I think it is the characters that attract me to any book. Most of the books I read over and over are fantasy but I don't think that is what I love about them.
Which book has had the biggest impact on you/completely changed your life? (apart from the Bible)
Harry Potter has certainly had an impact in that I am almost always reading through the series, and it sparked a facination with the UK. The Chronicles of Narnia, though, have probably been more important. They paint such wonderful pictures of Jesus and the Christian life. I especially love The Last Battle.
Which book do you most want to see as a movie done well which has not been turned into a movie already?
I am really looking forward to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Hitch-hiker's guide to the universe (mainly for Tim from the office), but they have already been made, so I'll say A Suitable Boy - I think Bollywood is cool.
Frankly, I'm bored and I didn't even do a thorough job. Still at least I've posted again in under a week!
